For（フォール）【前】［注意］主なる意味は第一、目的（for what purpose?）第二、交換（exchange A for B）。第三、理由（for what reason?）。第四、関係（for that matter）。第五、時限（for an age）。ほかの用法は目的、交換、理由、関係の意味より出づ。
①【目的地】（何処に）向って（出発する）。向けて（出帆する）。（何処）行きの（船）。To
leave（start, set out）for some place.何処に向って出発する。To sall（set sail）
for Australia.豪州に向けて出帆する。To embark（take ship）
for Shanghai.上海
行の船に乗船する。The ship is bound for Port Arthur.旅順行きの船。My luggage
is booked for Kobe.神戸行の手荷物。These goods are destined for China.支那
行の貨物。These guns are（destined）for the new ships.新造艦に搭載する大砲
②【目的の人】（誰）宛ての（手紙）。（誰に）遣る（金品など）。（誰に）見せたい（物）
聞かせたい（事）。（誰の）為に調へた（品など）。Are there any letters for me? 私に手紙が来て居りませんか（と旅行中など郵便局にて尋ねる）。Whom is that letter
for?其手紙は誰へ来たのか。Whom is this book for?此本は誰に下さるのか。
It is for you.君に上げるのだ。Here is something for you!（少いが）お前に遣る。
Here is（I have）news for you!君に聞かせたいことがある。The earth was made
for man.人の為に造られなり。They seem made for each other.二人は似合
った夫婦に成る。These books were bought for you.君の為に調へし本。These
books are written（intended）for Japanese students.日本学生の為に作った本。
A hard task has benn left（put aside, reserved）for you.君の為に難役が残してある。
③【出世の目的】（何に）成る（人）。（誰を何に）する（積り。）He is designed for
something great―destined for the crown.（生れ付き）大成す可き（運命の）人。天下
を取る人。My father intended me for a physician.父は私を医者にする積りであ
った。He is made for―cut out for―a teacher.教師（学校）向きに出来て居る。
④【準備、予備の目的】（何の）為に（用意する又は備える）。To prepare（get ready）
for departure.出発の用意をする。To prepare oneself for an examination.試験の
用意。To make preparations for a festival.祭祀の用意。To clear for action
戦闘準備。To dress for dinner.会食の支度（燕尾服に着替える）。To provide
for one's family.家族（子供）を養う。To provide for the future.将来の備えをする。
⑤【純粋の目的】（何の）為に（学ぶなど）。（誰を）益する為に（働くなど）。For what
parpose do you learn?―What do you learn for?何の為に学ぶか。For the
purposes.教育上の目的に（有用など）。Nitric aci is used for testing gold.金を
試すに硝酸を用ひる。Pictures（not）for sale.（非）売品。Horses for hire.借馬
To read for amusement（for pleasure, for fun）.慰みに読書する。To do anything
for practice.稽古に（何する）。To do anything for effect.見えにする。To travel for
the good of one's health.保養の為（旅行）。To labour for the benefit of the pubilc
―for the pubilc good.公益の為に（盡す）。will negotiate for your advantage.
君の利益を図る。I would do anything for your sake.君の為めをらんでも。Spare him
for my sake!僕に免じて助けて遣って呉れ。He would do anything for the sake
of gain.金の為めなら何でもする。She lives for（the sake of）her child.此世の楽みは
子供丈。They are ready to die for（the sake of）their country.国家の為めには何時
でも生命を捨てる。He loves labour for its own sake―for itself―labours for
labour's sake.働くのが道楽 Practice virtue for virtue's sake.徳行を道楽に

せよ（賞を望むな）。She loves him for himself.（金などでなく）人に惚れて居る。
⑥【不定法の主格関係】For me to go is impossible.僕が行く事は不可能。It is for
you to do it.君が為す可き事。It is not for me to live in such a house.斯んな家
に住むのは勿体無い。It is not for me to dictate to you, but…指図がましい事
を云う様ですが。Is there a house for foreigners to stop in.外国人が泊る家
⑦【不定法の代用】I am going out for（＝to take）a walk.散歩に行く処。He has gone home for（＝to take）his dinner.食事をしに帰った。Send for（＝to procure）the doctor!医者を呼びに（使を）遣れ。I will send（or write） for a copy.（手紙を
遣って）一部取り寄せよう。Please call for the article.品物を取りに来て下さい。
run for your life!逃げて生命を全うせよ（一生懸命逃げろ）。To sit for one's
portrait （or photograph）肖像を書かせる。To sit for an examination.試験を受ける
⑧【努力の目的】（何の）為に（働く）。To toil for money or fame.名利に奔走する
To work for one's bread.働いて飯を食う。To play for money―for love―for
empire.金を懸けて（懸けずに）勝負事をする。天下遣り取りの博奕。To fight for independence.独立戦争。To struggle for existence.生存競争。To strive for
mastery.雌雄を争う。To contend for a prize.獲物を争う。To compete for
custom.（商人が）得意を争う。To scramble fr places.席を争う（奪い合い）
To try for a prize.商品を取る競争をする。To try for entrance.入学試験を受ける
⑨【捜索、追及の目的】To seach（hunt, drag, look）for anything.捜索する。To
seek（look out）for employment.職を求める。To fish for compliments.水を向ける
賞めて貰はうとする。To feel for one's purse―grope for anything.さぐる、手探り。
⑩【請求、西岸の目的】To ask for―beg for―sue for―pray for―apply
for―somethings.物を乞う。To ask for―inquire for―a person.人を尋ねる。
To cry for help.叫んで助けを乞う。To call for wine and food.酒肴を命ずる。
⑪【願望、思慕の目的】How I wish for―Oh for―a pair of wings!翼が欲しや。
I do not care for wealth or fame.名利を望まず。How I long for a sight of my
home!故郷恋しや。The mother yearns for her child.母は子を思う。To sigh
（gasp, pant）for some one.焦れる。To pine（languish）for love.恋煩い。To
hunger and thirst for knowlegde.智識を渇望する。To be eager（anxious）
concerned, solicitous, sick, mad, dying）for something.切に望む（熱望する）。To fell
a longing for home.故郷が恋しい。To feel a craving for peace.平和を渇望する。
To have an appetite for the marvellous.（子供などが）不思議な話を聞きたがる。
⑫【嗜好、才能の目的】I have a liking for him.あの人は何処か好きだ。He has
an unconquerable love for drink.酒が好きで止められぬ。To have a taste for
reading.読書が好き。To have a fancy for yachting.船遊びが好き。To have
an inclination for study.勉強が好き。To have a passion for gambling.博奕
に凝って居る。To have a（no）regard for truth.眞ことを重んずる（重んぜぬ）。
To have a respect for a person.人を尊敬する。To have a contempt for custom.
俗習を蔑視する。To have a genius for poetry.詩才がある。To have a talent for
business.実務の才がある。To have an aptitude for languages.語学の才がある。
To have an ear（for music）音楽の才あり。To have an eye for the beautiful.審
美眼あり。To have a hand for all sorts of dishes.料理の才あり（何料理でも出来る）
⑬【希望、期待の目的】Time and tide wait for no man.歳月は人を待たず。Do
not hope（look）for success!成功を期待するな。Hope for the best!悲観するな
